Where to See Spectacular Fall Foliage in the Smokies

October 20, 20232 min read

When autumn arrives in the Great Smoky Mountains, nature puts on a vibrant show of colors that attract visitors from near and far. The mountains come alive with the warm hues of red, orange, and gold as the leaves change, creating a breathtaking landscape. If you're planning a trip to witness this natural wonder, here's a guide on where to see the best fall foliage in the Smokies.

  1. Clingmans Dome: At 6,643 feet, Clingmans Dome is the highest point in the Smoky Mountains. The observation tower at the summit offers panoramic views of the surrounding forests, making it one of the most iconic spots to witness the fall transformation.

  2. Newfound Gap: Located on the border of North Carolina and Tennessee, Newfound Gap provides a picturesque setting with a clear view of the Appalachian Mountains. The drive along Newfound Gap Road is especially scenic during the fall season.

  3. Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail: This one-way loop road offers a close-up look at the fall foliage. The thick forest on either side of the road becomes a patchwork of vibrant colors, making it perfect for a leisurely drive or a hike.

  4. Cades Cove: Cades Cove is a valley surrounded by mountains, and it's one of the most popular spots for fall leaf-peeping. The combination of open fields and dense woodlands creates a fantastic variety of fall colors.

  5. Alum Cave Trail: If you prefer to experience the fall foliage through a hike, the Alum Cave Trail is an excellent choice. This moderately strenuous hike takes you through a forested path that's particularly striking in the fall.

  6. Great Smoky Mountains National Park Overlooks: Throughout the park, there are numerous overlooks that provide outstanding vistas of the changing leaves. Keep an eye out for spots like Morton Overlook and Sugarlands Valley Overlook.

  7. Gatlinburg: The charming town of Gatlinburg is nestled in the heart of the Smokies. As you stroll along the streets, you'll be surrounded by beautiful trees displaying their autumn splendor.

  8. The Blue Ridge Parkway: While not in the Smoky Mountains themselves, the nearby Blue Ridge Parkway offers some of the most stunning fall foliage drives in the country. Take a scenic drive and enjoy the breathtaking views.

Visiting the Great Smoky Mountains during the fall season is an unforgettable experience. The vibrant colors and serene landscapes make it a must-see destination for nature lovers and photographers. Whether you prefer scenic drives, hikes, or simply relaxing in a cozy cabin, there are plenty of opportunities to revel in the beauty of the Smokies during this magical time of year. Don't miss out on the chance to witness the fall foliage in all its glory!
