September 08, 20233 min read

The Smoky Mountains, with their misty peaks and lush greenery, have long been associated with rich Appalachian culture and tradition. Among the many facets of this culture, one of the most famous is moonshine production. The rugged terrain and the deep-rooted history of distilling have made the Smoky Mountains a hub for both illegal and legal moonshine production. In this blog, we'll take you on a journey through some of the authentic moonshine distilleries in the Smokies, where you can experience the art and heritage of this age-old craft.

1. Ole Smoky Moonshine Distillery

Located in the heart of Gatlinburg, Tennessee, Ole Smoky Moonshine Distillery is often considered the pioneer of legal moonshine in the area. As you step into their rustic distillery, you're immediately greeted with the sweet aroma of corn mash bubbling in copper stills. The distillery offers a range of moonshine flavors, from classic to creative, such as apple pie, blackberry, and even their famous "White Lightnin'."

The Ole Smoky experience isn't just about tasting moonshine; it's also about witnessing the production process, complete with live music and an authentic Appalachian atmosphere. It's the perfect place to learn about the history of moonshine in the Smokies and sample some of the finest legal spirits.

2. Sugarlands Distilling Company

Nestled in Gatlinburg, Sugarlands Distilling Company is another must-visit moonshine distillery. The name "Sugarlands" pays homage to the region's history of producing moonshine from corn and sugar. The distillery offers an array of moonshine flavors, ranging from classics like unaged "Silver Cloud" to unique creations like "Pina Colada" and "Hazelnut Rum."

What sets Sugarlands apart is its commitment to preserving the legacy of Appalachian moonshiners. Visitors can take guided tours, where they'll learn about the moonshine-making process and hear tales of the local moonshiners who once called these mountains home.

3. Doc Collier Moonshine Distillery

If you're looking for a more intimate moonshine experience, Doc Collier Moonshine Distillery in Gatlinburg is the place to go. Named after a legendary local moonshiner, Doc Collier's is known for its traditional-style moonshines, which pay homage to the authentic recipes and methods used by moonshiners of yesteryears.

The distillery offers a selection of moonshines, from the classic "Corn Whiskey" to the subtly flavored "Apple Pie." It's a cozy and welcoming spot where you can chat with the friendly staff and gain insights into the history and heritage of moonshining in the Smoky Mountains.

4. Tennessee Homemade Wines

While not exclusively a moonshine distillery, Tennessee Homemade Wines in Gatlinburg offers a delightful selection of fruit wines and moonshine-inspired spirits. Their "Gatlinburg Sippin' Creams" are a unique blend of cream liqueur and moonshine flavors, creating a smooth and indulgent sipping experience. The distillery's commitment to local ingredients and craftsmanship shines through in every bottle.

5. Bootleggers Homemade Wine

Another gem in Gatlinburg, Bootleggers Homemade Wine offers a diverse range of moonshine and wine options. Their "Bootlegger's Apple Pie" moonshine is a favorite, offering a sweet and spicy twist on tradition. The distillery's rustic ambiance and friendly staff make it a welcoming spot to explore the world of moonshine and wine.

In conclusion, visiting moonshine distilleries in the Smoky Mountains is not just about tasting spirits; it's about immersing yourself in the history, culture, and craftsmanship of this iconic Appalachian tradition.
